Restoration of Houses at Ostia, sections to one sixteenth scale

The drawings on the left-hand side show an east facing cross-section through the Insula of the Paintings built in the Hadrianic period that fronted on to Via dei Dipinti, excavations of which were started by Rodolfo Lanciani and completed by Calza in 1919. Beginning on the left, the section runs through the House of Jove and Ganymede, whilst the rest of the prospect, as the building was in an L-shape, shows the rear of the House of the Infant Bacchus and House of the Paintings which opened upon an internal courtyard.
On the righthand side of the drawing is a north facing cross-section through the building, including the House of Jove and Ganymede and the flanking shops that opened on to Via dei Balconi. In the background can be seen the south side of Via di Diana and the insula that included the House of the Wine Bar, House of the Pantomime Apolaustus and House of the Wooden Balcony. The drawing was published by Calza in his 1923 article Le origini latine dell’abitazione moderna (Figs. 15 and 16, p. 15).
