Introduction

This exhibition is part of the First Mile of the Via Latina Project, a collaboration between the British School at Rome (BSR) and the Norwegian Institute in Rome (DNIR). The project aims to study the history, archaeology, and topography of the initial stretch of the ancient via Latina within Rome’s Aurelianic walls, from antiquity to the present day.

The exhibition, in both English and Norwegian, brings together nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs of this part of the via Latina held by the historic research collections of the BSR and DNIR, together with photographs of how the area appears today. The comparison highlights the changes that have occurred in the last century and a half, particularly with regard to the ‘restoration’ of monuments.

The exhibition in Norwegian, hosted by the DNIR, can be accessed here.

Curated by Stephen Kay (BSR) and Christopher Siwicki (DNIR).
