Via di Porta Latina (left) and via di Porta San Sebastiano

Although trees now mask the topography of the area, relatively little has changed in the 230 years since Labruzzi stood here. The portal to the vineyards on the left is now blocked. A cylindrical travertine road sign was placed at the fork in the twentieth century and Clemente VIII’s column still stands on the grass behind, out of sight. However, two of the major monuments on the via Latina – the church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina and the Porta Latina itself – show that the apparent absence of change in the intervening centuries is illusory.
