Extracted from a series of duplicate pamphlets available in the Library of the British School at Rome, Brennan’s work displays a sequence of back covers as documents of time. In the absence of text, attention is drawn to the paper itself, discoloured by years of sunlight. In this work, the empty pages ask us to consider paper as the substance of written histories. Here, the absent narratives might point to unwritten histories or forms of knowledge historically categorized as invalid – lived experience, intergenerational exchange, gossip or otherwise.
