In 1931, an Obituary Notice for Thomas Ashby was published by Arthur Hamilton Smith in the Proceedings of the British Academy. In it, Smith reflect on how Ashby had 'witnessed and taken a large share in [the BSR's] transformation from a small beginning to a mature public body' (1931: 526). This year, 2025, marks a century since Thomas Ashby's tenure at the BSR (1906 to 1925).
This exhibition was curated by Nicole Moffatt (Macquarie Gale Fellow 2017). The Australian leg of Thomas Ashby's journey in 1914 is the subject of a forthcoming article for the Papers of the British School at Rome (2025), 'Photographing a Sunburnt Country: A Study of Thomas Ashby’s Australian Series'.
This project was inspired by another on the BSR virtual exhibition by Janet Wade and Alessandra Giovenco, Expeditions from Rome: Travelling along the ancient roads of Italy with Thomas Ashby and his companions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Finally, my sincere thanks to
The Getty Foundation for sponsoring the project to catalogue and digitise Thomas Ashby's photographs, and
Beatrice Gelosia (BSR Deputy Librarian), Raphaële Mouren (BSR Head of Research Collections), and Alessandra Giovenco (BSR Archivist), for their support and guidance with this research.
