Churches, campanile of the church of S. John at the Porta Latina
This photograph by Parker, taken 1864-66, shows the campanile and porch of the church before their restoration. Unlike today, all but the top storey, the arched windows of the belltower are blocked, replaced with small rectangular openings. The roof line of the porch is higher, as at some date an upper floor was inserted and all but the central columns of the portico walled in. During the twentieth century restoration, three arched windows were opened above the now lower roof, and a circular window inserted above these, inline with how the church appears in earlier depictions.
