Well at San Giovanni a Porta Latina
Today, the wellhead again sits in the corner of the forecourt and the surrounding ground level (as well as that of the church porch behind) has been lowered to expose a marble base, not visible in Parker’s photograph. The column shafts of the frame remain, but their capping stones were seemingly substituted during the restoration with ancient Corinthian capitals, presumably to make the ensemble appear more ‘medieval’ in its use of the spolia.
