Travelling to the Umbrian towns of the Via Flaminia alternativa
Agnes and Dora Bulwer were two talented British amateur photographers who regularly accompanied Ashby and others on their excursions from Rome. The sisters travelled extensively throughout Italy, and they donated many of their prints and negatives to Ashby and the BSR. One of their itineraries for which we have a visual record is the alternative line of the Via Flaminia antica in Umbria. This alternative route diverged from the main line at Narni until it re-joined the original road at Foligno.
This image was taken by either Dora or Agnes looking towards Narni from close to the line of the ancient Via Flaminia. Today, it is impossible to take a similar photograph from the same location due to the vegetation beside the river Nera and the buildings alongside the railway line in this vicinity.
