When Ashby and Gardner returned to Rome in May 1913, they followed the route of the ancient Via Traiana, stopping at various sites along the way. One of these locations was the important ancient port city of Egnazia. Gardner photographed the extensive and magnificent archaeological ruins of the city with its citadel, as well as a portion of the city’s harbour wall (pictured).
