From Umbria, the Via Flaminia runs through the regions of Marche and Emilia-Romagna. Ashby does not seem to have visited these regions—apart from Rimini in 1900 - but Fell traversed the length of the road from near Civita Castellana in Lazio to the Adriatic coastline at Fano (ancient Fanum Fortunae) in Marche, walking on the line of the ancient road through the Arch of Augustus at Fano in April 1921. It is not clear whether Fell travelled mostly by train, bicycle, or on foot, but we can trace his general movements along the Via Flaminia and into parts of Etruria through his photographs.
