One of Ashby’s trips to Narni was in October/November 1911 with Arnold J. Toynbee, a short-term resident at the school who later became renowned as an historian and philosopher. The pair cycled sections of the Via Flaminia and Via Salaria in Umbria that year. Ashby and Toynbee made two separate trips along the Via Flaminia in 1911: the first from Terni to Spoleto, and the second from Terni to Narni. It was on the first of these tours that the two cyclists made a short detour into the scenic hilltop town of Cesi to admire ancient and medieval ruins and picturesque views. This image shows Toynbee admiring an inscription, and their bicycles can be seen in the background.
