Further north on the Via Flaminia in Umbria, Ashby and his friends and colleagues visited the town of Narni with its spectacular Roman bridges. The Bridge of Augustus was a highlight of their trips, and the BSR holds a selection of images taken of the bridge over the years (see Dora Bulwer’s photograph later in this exhibition). But there were other Roman bridges to see as well, including the Calamone bridge (pictured). The photographs of Ponte Calamone by Reverend Peter Paul Mackey in 1896 and Ashby in the early 1920s are invaluable as the bridge was later destroyed in WWII.
