From Benevento, our two travellers re-joined the Via Appia and made their way to their final stop at Terracina, on the southern coast of Lazio. Terracina was a popular stop for travellers from Rome, so there are many images from the city in the BSR Archive. Ashby took various photographs whilst there, but he also had images taken by Agnes and Dora Bulwer in his photo albums. Pictured is the cathedral at Terracina by one of the Bulwer sisters.

For more details of Ashby’s Roman roads project and his involvement of BSR award-holders like Gardner and Beaumont in his work, see J. Wade, Expeditions from Rome: Thomas Ashby, his BSR companions and the Roman roads of Italy, Papers of the British School at Rome 90 (2022), 267–295.
