The ancient line of the Via Flaminia runs directly to and from the gates of Spoleto. Within the city walls there were numerous archaeological remains and other sites for travellers like Agnes and Dora to photograph. Ashby also took photographs in Spoleto, including 21 images when he visited in 1899 and more when he was there with Toynbee in October 1911.

This image by one of the Bulwer sisters depicts the Arch of Drusus in the centre of town at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dora (or Agnes) has also captured many of the locals intrigued by the female photographer setting up her frame.
